ORTHOPEDIC REHABILITATION
REHABILITATION
HYALURONIC ACID INJECTIONS
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial fluid surrounding joints. Healthy joints have synovial fluid in them which acts as a lubricant that allows the bones to glide smoothly over each other. The synovial fluid also acts as a “shock absorber” in response to the increased forces across the joint. When the cartilage of the knee joint wears down, there is less hyaluronan and pain can occur. By injecting hyaluronic acid into the osteoarthritic joint, it can mimic the qualities of synovial fluid and provide pain relief. Hyaluronic acid injections are most effective in early stages of osteoarthritis.
CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS
Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory medications that can be given to relieve pain from inflamed tendons, bursae, and joints. Therapeutically, these injections can provide fast pain relief and decrease inflammation. Diagnostically, these injections can also help “quantify” the amount of pain coming from one sight when there might be multiple pain sources. Although cortisone can be very effective, there are risks of cortisone as well, and these should be discussed with your provider. The effects of these injections are also variable. They should not be repeated frequently due to possible risk of cartilage damage or soft tissue deterioration.
