Active Release Technique (ART) is one of the most advanced soft tissue techniques available. Most professional sports organizations have a certified ART practitioner on their sidelines. What is ART?
Active Release Techniques® (ART) is a specialized, hands-on treatment which allows us to diagnose and treat soft tissue injuries that occur in your muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood vessels and fascia. Damage can take place within the tissues themselves from sudden trauma (tears, sprains, blunt trauma.) Other damage can accumulate over time such as in the case of carpal tunnel, tendonitis, bursitis, or poor posture.
Your body’s natural response is to replace the damaged tissue with something inferior – scar tissue or fibrosis. The scarring process causes the inferior tissues to adhere to themselves as well as to other related structures, resulting in stiffness, pain, decreased function, and sometimes numbness and tingling.
ART® is the only treatment designed to effectively treat soft tissue injuries within nearly every structure of the musculoskeletal system. Combining the understanding of biomechanics and movement with hands-on applied techniques, ART® treatment protocols normalize the relationship of moving tissues to one another – thereby eliminating pain and dysfunction

We also utilize the graston technique, and other related services for your benefit.
What is an Active Release Technique treatment like?
After a diagnosis has been reached based on a history and examination, treatment can be rendered. Since soft tissue injuries created by scar tissue cannot be detected by a machine (such as X-ray or MRI), or by any orthopedic tests, ART is itself a diagnostic tool. The practitioner can determine where the adhesions are, and how severe the soft tissue injury is, simply by his/her touch.
ART is generally performed with a direct contact from the doctor to the patient’s skin. The practitioner will find the area to be worked on and either have the patient actively move a body part or passively move the body part for the patient. The practitioner’s contact, coupled with the movement of the patient, allows the adhesions to separate.
The treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient.

Dose ART hurt?
ART goes right after the sights of adhesion in order to break up the scar tissue creating the pain and dysfunction. Since these sights are very sensitive to begin with, ART may create some discomfort described by many patients as a “good hurt”. However, pressure is never applied beyond the patient’s tolerance.
Why Active Release Technique?
Active Release Technique in Gig Harbor can be use to treat acute injury’s from sports, everyday life, car accidents, and repetitive motion injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome, pronation syndrome, and a other problems associated with overuse. These types of injuries are termed cumulative trauma injuries. Other than acute sports and car accident injuries, these are typically problems that build over time and sneak up on you. You suddenly develop pain in your hip, shoulder, wrist, or such. ART is the gold standard in treating soft tissue injuries, which is why it is quickly become a standard of care for professional athletes, Olympians.
How Does ART Help?
The basic premise of the technique is that scar tissue, or adhesions are formed with overuse activity or single traumatic injuries. With overusing a muscle, a lack of oxygen is created which attract fibroblastic cells that lay down scar tissue. With single traumatic injuries, or surgical sites, they can also produce scar tissue, due to the lack or tissue regeneration ability.
Scar tissue restricts the normal function of tissue. Such as movement, contraction, relaxation that are needed for optimal function. When optimal function is retarded through stability or mobility, dysfunction will arise and pain will follow. Getting the Active Release Technique in Gig Harbor performed at our office will give you results. After the first treatment, you will usually notice improved motion with less pain.
This is a technique that everyone can benefit from and can have long lasting results. Our everyday motions or lack of motion can create scar tissue that can be treated by ART. What is Active Release Technique? It is a technique that is taught around the entire world because it has proved useful in restoring that bodies natural function. Who can benefit from ART?
The quick answer to this is anyone who is in pain due to a soft tissue injury. ART is used in a clinical setting on Professional and Olympic athletes, office workers, laborers, housewives, youth athletes, weekend warriors, marathon runners, triathletes, CrossFit enthusiast as well as many others. What these people all have in common are overuse injuries, it is simply the mechanism or cause of the injury that varies. ART effectively treats muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia throughout the body that have become congested with scar tissue by freeing up their ability to function and thereby reducing pain.
Active Release Techniques in Gig Harbor – Applied by the Chiropractors at PRO SPORT. ART is also effective at treating peripheral nerve entrapments where a nerve has become entangled by scar tissue and has tension or pressure exerted during certain positions or movements. Through a provider’s extensive training, they are taught where the nerves are most likely entrapped and how best to reduce the adhesions. This gives individuals who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome and other peripheral nerve entrapments a quick and easy solution to their complaints.
Conservative treatments such as ART should be explored before a person has decided they cannot be helped for their given condition. You don’t have to live with pain. If it’s a soft tissue structure that is causing your pain, it can most likely be fixed.
